Let’s talk about one of the biggest hidden gems of pregnancy: getting high-quality

maternity and postpartum support items completely free — through your insurance.
Yes, free.
No catch.
No “pay $10 shipping” like the baby registry “free boxes.”
Just real items you’ll actually use — covered by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
And yet? So many women don’t know this is even an option. Instead, they:
Pay out of pocket
Add these items to their baby registry
Or miss out completely
This post is for them — and for anyone expecting and trying to stretch their budget without compromising quality.
🍼 Get A Free Breast Pump And More
I originally thought I was just getting a free breast pump — and that alone felt like a win. But what did I end up ordering?
🤱🏾A Medela Swing Maxi Hands-Free Breast Pump (value: ~$249)
🚼 Motif Breast Milk Storage Bags (plus free refills — 300 bags every 3 months!)
🧦 Compression Support Socks (essential for circulation and swelling prevention)
🤰🏾 A Maternity Support Band (needed these days for lifting the baby)
🆓 A Postpartum Compression Garment (for the “snapback” plan)
Five full-sized, high-quality products — all completely covered by my insurance.
Total value? Easily over $400.
Total cost to me? $0.00.
And to be clear — I wasn’t expecting any of it but the pump.
📦 How the Process Works (What You Need to Know to Get Your Free Breast Pump)
I used Aeroflow Breastpumps — and I highly recommend them.
Why?
Super simple form to check insurance
They verify your benefits instantly
They even work with Medicaid (which many other platforms still don’t!)
And they guide you through every step — including contacting your doctor for you

📆 When Can You Order?
Most insurers require that you be at least 6 months pregnant before placing your order. I placed mine just two days ago — and in two more days, I’ll officially be 7 months pregnant.
At first, I thought I was just getting a breast pump. But then Aeroflow let me know I was also eligible for additional support items — breast milk storage bags, compression socks, a maternity support band, and a postpartum compression garment.
But here’s what I learned (and it’s important):
➡️ Each item needs to be specifically listed on your Rx.
My original Rx only covered the pump (and therefore the milk bags), so I had to reach out to my midwife and request an updated prescription for the rest.
After speaking with my nurse, here’s the deal:
✅ They will send an updated Rx for the compression socks and maternity support band
🚫 But they won’t send an Rx for the postpartum compression garment until after I deliver — because they don’t know yet whether I’ll have a vaginal or C-section birth
Apparently, coverage for the compression garment depends on the delivery type, which makes sense in hindsight but wasn’t something I knew beforehand.
🔍 About Those “Free” Registry Boxes…
Let’s clear this up:
Aeroflow is easily the best deal I’ve found while preparing for baby Chi. Nothing else compares.
🏛️ A Win from the Affordable Care Act (And Why We Hope It Stays)
All of this is made possible thanks to the Affordable Care Act, which mandates insurance coverage for certain maternity and postpartum support items — including breast pumps and related supplies.
It’s easy to take this for granted… until you realize how fragile these kinds of policies are. With ongoing efforts by some lawmakers to roll back the ACA or reduce Medicaid access, we have to stay vocal and grateful for these types of protections.
Because honestly? These items aren’t just nice extras. They make recovery easier, breastfeeding possible, and overall care more equitable.
🛍️ Bargain Babying & the Power of Choice
One of the things Anthony and I decided early on is that we’d shop smart, not just shop fast. Instead of filling up a registry with trendy products, we focused on:
Needs over wants
Flexibility over inventory
And asking for cash gifts so we could choose the best deals ourselves
It’s let us stretch our budget, shop intentionally, and still have access to quality products — like the ones I got through Aeroflow.
💡 And yes — I’ll be sharing more baby-on-a-budget wins soon!

💛 Final Thoughts
If you’re expecting — or know someone who is — please share this with them.
The fact that I got 4 essential products fully covered by insurance is amazing. It’s a resource we should all be talking about more, especially for new mamas navigating it all for the first time.
This is how we support each other. This is how we thrive. And this is how we prepare for a baby without going broke!
